ABOUT INDONESIA
Indonesia is an independent republic consisting of more than 17,500 islands spread over 3,400 miles along the Equator. The main islands are Java, Sumatra, Bali, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes), Papua, Halmahera, and Seram. The capital city of Jakarta lies in the lowlands of West Java, the most populated island. The country has approximately 246,000,000 people and more than 300 ethnic groups.
WHY INDONESIA?
Indonesia’s economy grew more than 6 per cent for a fourth straight quarter in 2011 as consumption, investment and exports weathered a faltering global recovery.
Gross domestic product (GDP) rose 6.54 per cent in the three months through September from a year earlier, compared with a revised 6.52 per cent in the second quarter, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The world’s fourth most populous nation relies on consumption more than some of its neighbors, making it less vulnerable to swings in global demand. Amidst a rapidly rising middle class and expanding consumer market (the Indonesian GDP per capita breached US$3,000 in 2010), the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) rose to above US$1 trillion.
Foreign investors taking notice, have pumped a record US$19.3 billion into Indonesia in 2011, up 20 per cent from the previous year.
In summary:
1. Indonesia is the biggest consumer market in Asia, just behind China and India;
2. Indonesia has a fast growing middle class of consumers
3. The Indonesian government is promoting market liberalization and infrastructure acceleration;
4. Indonesia investment is now considered “investment grade” by the international community, and
5. There is an upward trend of economic growth and political stability.
